Digital reboot

High fashion meets high-performance engineering

Alexia María is a luxury evening wear house celebrated for sculptural silhouettes, signature bows, and a made-to-order practice deeply rooted in haute couture. With pieces starting at $1,200, Alexia María fashions are pure elegance. Their gowns regularly grace red carpets on icons like Ariana Grande, Paris Hilton, Gwen Stefani, Hilary Duff, and Olivia Palermo. Their recent collection even debuted on Sixteen Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, co-hosted by Palermo herself.

While the brand's front of house is built on high fashion, the back of the house requires serious engineering.

When Paohaus first partnered with Alexia María over nine years ago, the luxury label was running on WordPress (dun dun dun). They were leveraging a classic, generalist stack while trying to support a highly specialized, rapidly scaling couture catalog. Their e-commerce experience simply did not match the meticulous craft and quality of their gowns. The initial goal of our partnership was clear: architect a digital home for Alexia María to match the brand's premium positioning while building a backend stable enough to survive massive, celebrity-driven traffic spikes.

Strategy mapping

We orchestrated a complete platform migration, moving Alexia María from WordPress to a custom-engineered Shopify architecture. This was not a superficial face-lift. We structured the migration around user behavior and conversion science, mapping out an infrastructure capable of handling intense catalog complexity without slowing down the user experience.

Catalog architecture

A luxury made-to-order model introduces massive data management challenges. Every single gown requires over 100 variants spanning custom colors, high-end fabrics, and unique silhouettes. We built a data framework that organizes these variants cleanly, keeping the site fast and the inventory manageable.

Digital swatch journey

To bridge the gap between physical haute couture and digital shopping, we designed an intuitive swatch experience. Customers can interact with and select fabric variations in real time, bringing a tactile, salon-like confidence to the digital storefront.

Design phase

Tailoring an interface for the editorial eye

Our design journey focused on creating a balance between high-end editorial storytelling and high-performance e-commerce strategies. Luxury web design often falls into the trap of prioritizing aesthetics at the expense of usability. We wanted to prove that universal accessibility and premium style can live in the same system.

We engineered custom lookbook pages that mirror the sophisticated feel of a physical fashion magazine, utilizing generous white space and clean layout systems. These elements do more than just look elegant; they establish clear visual hierarchies and reduce cognitive load for a better user experience.

Product detail page rebuild

The core of our strategy centered on a total rethink of the product detail page (PDP). The original page layout was not converting at the level a luxury house demands. To fix this, we ran live, collaborative design sessions with the client, layering proven conversion patterns over the brand's unique visual language.

The resulting PDP architecture optimizes the path to purchase by making variant selection entirely intuitive, embedding clear sizing guides, and creating a layout that prioritizes mobile devices, supporting their large social media audience.

UX and UI alterations

  • Re-engineered the overall user experience, navigation flow, and visual design of the storefront.
  • Developed a responsive theme from scratch, ensuring fast load times and seamless mobile scaling.
  • Created an intuitive color and fabric swatch system to manage over 100 variants per product.
  • Formulated an editorial lookbook architecture that elevates collection drops and campaign imagery.
  • Integrated Klaviyo tracking and automated workflows to nurture the customer lifecycle across all touchpoints.

Development

Our engineering team built Alexia María's new platform with a merchant-first mindset. A common pitfall in luxury web development is delivering a beautiful site that the client's internal team can't actually manage without calling a developer. We built the exact opposite: an intuitive, component-based Shopify theme that empowers the client to own their store and update it themselves in real time.

Hi, I added the new color swatches but cannot seem to display them. Any chance you can assist with this? Thanks!

Yep, no problem. Give me a few minutes and I'll get right back to you.

Because we implemented this component-based system, the internal team at Alexia María can launch collections independently, update sitewide promotional copy, manage complex variant matrices, and spin up new editorial lookbooks on the fly.

These days, we primarily step in for heavy lifting: technical edge cases, continuous conversion rate optimization (CRO) experimentation, and deep strategic planning for the future of their digital ecosystem.

What’s next

The digital landscape doesn’t stand still. We’re currently testing cutting-edge AI-generated avatar campaigns for upcoming Alexia María collections. This strategy allows the evening wear house to experiment with high-end editorial visuals at the rapid pace social media demands, exponentially expanding their asset library without requiring a massive physical photo shoot for every minor drop.

Results

Our near decade-long partnership has transformed Alexia María from a luxury label on a limited, WordPress framework into an e-commerce powerhouse with an unshakeable technical foundation. When their gowns end up on the world's biggest stages and massive amounts of traffic flock to them, their website represents the brand well and keeps up.

Kind words from Alexia María

We came to Paohaus because we'd hit the ceiling of what standard Shopify could do for us. As a made-to-order luxury fashion brand, our website needed to work as hard as our product, and it wasn't there yet. Pages felt outdated, and the customer experience didn't match the level of the brand.

What we needed was custom everything: product detail pages that could handle an extensive range of styles, colors, sizes, and made-to-order configurations without feeling cluttered or confusing.

The collaboration was easy from day one. Communication was clear, ideas were heard, and even the complex stuff felt manageable. The result is a site that's refined, intuitive, and actually reflects who we are as a brand.

In e-commerce, speed matters. Sales launch, timelines shift, last-minute requests happen and having a partner who responds fast and gets it right is everything. PaoHaus feels like a true extension of our team. I'd recommend them without hesitation.
