Studio Field Notes
Volume 1

TL;DR
This week, the Paohaus team explored four key developments in AI and e-commerce to ensure we are providing the most future-proof strategies for our clients. We leveraged Google’s updated AI Studio for faster, streamlined AI prototyping and Adobe Firefly for high-fidelity asset expansion to save client production budgets. On the engineering side, we integrated Shopify’s new native opacity settings for cleaner designs and adopted Handy, an open-source tool, to accelerate our creative thinking and AI prompt engineering. We believe that curiosity is a core competency that keeps our studio at its best.
We started a new ritual over in our Slack channel. Every Thursday, we poll the entire Paohaus team to see what everyone is currently learning, breaking, or mastering. The landscape of design, engineering, UX, and AI tech moves faster than most agency models can keep up with, but in a boutique studio model like Paohaus, staying curious and constantly learning is our bread and butter. It’s what keeps us positioned as experts who are always building for what’s next.
Here are four things that caught our collective attention this week.
1. Google launched a new edition of AI Studio
Google dropped a major update to their AI Studio, and we are paying attention. This is big for our engineering and product strategy capabilities. The new version drastically streamlines how we can prototype and integrate generative AI capabilities into bespoke web applications. Simpler, faster access to more powerful models means we can move significantly faster on proof-of-concept work for clients looking to build proprietary AI tools or automated workflows. It is another step toward lowering the barrier for complex AI dev, and we’re already thinking about how to leverage it.
2. Adobe Firefly web app is a serious asset expander
We have been diving deep into Adobe's Firefly web app lately. While we use many generative AI tools, Firefly’s image and video capabilities have become impressively strong and actually reliable for professional workflows. We are currently leveraging this in two high-impact ways:
- Rapid proof-of-concept: Creating high-fidelity visual context for projects before we commit to expensive production or complex design sprints.
- Expanding client visual libraries: Taking a client's single, existing asset and turning it into a full suite of brand-matched visuals. We can generate flat lays, detail zooms, and lifestyle context shifts without the cost of a secondary photoshoot. This is a massive proactive budget saver that adds immediate visual interest to the customer journey.
3. A very small, very meaningful Shopify update
This one sounds minor, but it is a huge win for our Shopify development team. You can now add opacity directly within the color picker in Shopify settings. Previously, creating transparent overlays or subtle gradients based on theme settings required custom CSS hacks or hardcoding values. Now, it’s native. This is a meaningful quality-of-life update that allows for cleaner, more bespoke frontend designs that are also easier for our clients to manage themselves through the merchant backend. We love an intentional, friction-reducing update.
4. Discovery: Handy (open-source speech-to-text)
One of our developers discovered Handy, an open-source speech-to-text application that you run locally on your own machine. In an industry currently obsessed with sending all data to the cloud, a private, secure, local option is incredibly powerful for internal meeting transcriptions.
Beyond security, we are finding it is a massive productivity booster for the creative process. Our team is using it to write and refine AI prompts and reply to messages in real-time. It allows us to "think out loud" and talk through complex problems much faster, ensuring we never lose track of breakthrough ideas or mid-conversation epiphanies.
Why We Never Stop Testing
In an industry defined by rapid shifts in AI and digital architecture, standing still is a risk we are not willing to take. We believe that if you are not actively learning, you are stagnating. Keeping up with the latest tech is a full-time job, but it’s the only way to ensure we are operating at our absolute best, so we’re happy to do it.
At Paohaus, we treat curiosity as a core competency. By constantly breaking things, testing new tools, and questioning established workflows, we ensure that the strategies we provide are never outdated. We grow so that your business can grow. This weekly ritual is more than just a Slack poll: it is the pulse of our studio.
Keep learning.
